Gulfport Aviation Group Mobilized

Hundreds of guradsmen are in Gulfport this week, preparing for an overseas deployment.

About 200 members of the 1108th Aviation Classification and Repair Activity Depot reported for active duty at the Air National Guard base Tuesday. There, they received health, medical and dental screenings. Attorneys were even on hand to help make sure the guardsmen's wills are in order.

"The overall mood right now is pretty good, actually. Everybody's feeling, maybe a little bit of shock. We've known it's coming. But we're just hanging in there and everyone's in a good mood, so far," Scott Chaney with the 1108th AVCRAD Unit said.

The guardsmen will leave Friday for training at Camp Shelby before heading out. The unit will maintain U.S. Amry aircraft and is expected to be on active duty for at least a year.
