GARDENDALE, AL (WBRC) -

Two northbound lanes of I-65 near Gardendale have reopened after an 18-wheeler carrying gas overturned before exit 275 Monday morning.

ALDOT and environmental crews were on the scene for multiple hours on Monday working to finish the cleanup process.

I-65 southbound was closed most of the day, but opened back up Monday around 6 p.m.

Two of five tanks were punctured, causing hundreds of gallons of fuel to spill onto the road.

Authorities say the gas leaked for about an hour before it was contained.

Gardendale police urged people to take Highway 31 or 79 as alternate routes.

"All of our roads are just literally packed. All of this interstate traffic is now on our roads that aren't capable of handling all these cars," said Gardendale Mayor Stan Hogeland.

The driver of the 18-wheeler was injured and taken to UAB Hospital. He told police he swerved to avoid a car that was coming into his lane, which caused his load to shift and the truck to overturn.

His condition is not known at this time.
