Biloxi Will Not Place A Moratorium On Condo Development

Biloxi Mayor A.J. Holloway says the city has no plans to impose a moratorium on casino and condo development in the city.

There had been rumors the city would vote on such a move at Tuesday's city council meeting.

Council members did approve paying an engineering firm $357,000 to conduct a study on the city's ability to handle growing demands on the water and sewer capacity. But as for a moratorium on development, the mayor insists it was never considered.

"We are not stopping anybody from going ahead with their projects. There have been a lot of rumors, a lot of misinformation given out we will have a moratorium. We are not going to do that," Holloway said.

However, the mayor does say the city plans on assessing a fee on developers in the future. For instance, if more sewer capacity is needed to support a particular development, the development company would have to pay for the improvements, not the taxpayers.
