Regulators set January decision for Mississippi Power rates

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - Mississippi's three public service commissioners want to decide by January how much customers should pay for a disputed power plant.

The utility regulators Tuesday ordered Mississippi Power Co. and others to explain their positions on rates for the Kemper County power plant.

A hearing on the issue is set Dec. 4, with commissioners to decide on rates unless settlement talks revive.

The separate Public Utilities Staff has been unable to agree with Mississippi Power on rates for part of the plant that generates power using natural gas.

The unit of Atlanta-based Southern Co. has already lost $6 billion on Kemper. The staff, though, says Mississippi Power wants customers to pay for $250 million or more in assets than justified. Staff members offered $110 million more, but the company rejected it.
