BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

A tornado swept through western counties in Alabama Thursday evening.

The Pickens County EMA confirms downed trees and power lines in the northern part of the county, near the Reform area. Residents stated the area was unrecognizable when they saw the damage left behind.

Four people had to be pulled from a collapsed home. One of them was a child.

The child was flown to UAB Hospital for treatment.

"He was holding the baby. He said 'my wife, she's still under there,'" said the neighbor who helped rescue the family.

Trees are also down in the Palmetto area.

Several residents suffered home damage. Even so, the community rallied together to help each other. Several of them worked to drape a tarp over the blown out doors at the volunteer fire department.

The storm dumped loads of rain across the state and caused flooding in the Bessemer area.

Multiple homes in Fayette County also fell victim to the storm.
