BILOXI, MS (WLOX) -

Before the business portion of the Southern Legislative Conference kicked high gear, legislators packed the Coast Convention Center to help put food on the table for families in need.

Lawmakers from 15 southern states, and volunteers from around South Mississippi, participated in a 90 minute drive to help area food banks.

"The southern legislative conference, for six years or so now, has worked to help put a dent in the plight of the hungry," said MS Speaker Philip Gunn.

He's just one of many legislators who packed the Coast Convention Center to help put food on the table for families in need.

"These legislators come from 15 different states. So these are not just Mississippi legislators, these are legislators who are coming here to help support the state of Mississippi," said Gunn.

In addition to food, donations were made to companies who continue to work to end hunger. One of those checks went straight to the Mississippi Food Network.

"We are just so grateful to Speaker Gunn and Speaker Norris for this check. There are 600,000 people in the state of Mississippi who are hungry and food insecure," said Charles Beady, CEO of MS Food Network

But, it can be easily said that the Southern Legislative Conference is working to make sure that number doesn't get any higher.

"One thing that's significant about today's event is that over the six years we've been doing this, we will pass the one million meal mark today," said Gunn
