Ruth Frazier is a staple at her Ocean Springs hair salon, Stylemasters II.
"Lot of hair, lot of perms (over the years)."
She's served her loyal clients from around the Coast for the last 36 years.
"After that many years, your clients become more like family," Frazier said.
But there's more to this stylist than meets the eye. What stated out as a hobby to improve her leg circulation became a lifetime commitment. For nearly three decades, Ruth and her husband, Dennis, have biked across Gulf Islands National Seashore Park in Ocean Springs at over 120 miles per week.
"It's relaxing, and like any sport, it's a challenge to get better at it every time you do it," Frazier said of her love for cycling. "That's a great thing."
At her husband's behest, Frazier took her talents all the way to the big stage: last month's National Senior Games in Birmingham. Competing in the women's 70-74 age group, she brought home the gold in the 20k Road Race and silver in the 5k Time Trial.
"It felt really good, (a sense of) accomplishment, you know?" Frazier said. "It was just kind of the challenge of it, I think, that was kind of neat."
While Frazier isn't sure how many more competitions she'll participate in, she shows no signs of slowing down.
"I'll probably always work," Frazier said of her salon. "As long as I can stand, I'll work a little bit."
As for her advice for those considering picking up cycling?
"Even if you think you can't do it, get out there and try," Frazier said. "I never expected that I'd ever go to Nationals, and I did!"
