The cost associated with Gulfport's decision to negotiate its own garbage contract is finally known.
Thursday afternoon, city council approved a six-year contract with Waste Pro. For $14.36 a month - three cents more than the Harrison County Utility Authority - Waste Pro will empty garbage cans and remove other trash twice a week, and pick up recycling bins every other week.
Gulfport leaders decided negotiating their own contract with a garbage service provider made more sense than remaining part of the Harrison County Utility Authority's new deal.
The HCUA recently inked a garbage and recycling deal with Team Waste, and a trash removal contract with Pelican Waste. Residents in Biloxi, D'Iberville, Long Beach, Pass Christian and the unincorporated sections of the county will get garbage pickup once a week, trash pickup once a week, and recycling pickup once a week.
Those county residents will pay $14.33 for service, and receive new garbage cans and larger recycling carts.
Gulfport is sticking with current cans and smaller recycling bins.
