SOUTH MISSISSIPPI (WLOX) - We would expect that the city of Gulfport would get a better deal by teaming up with the rest of Harrison County along with the other cities when it comes to garbage collection. Dealing purely with economy of scale, it would seem to make sense. But the city of Gulfport didn't like the new proposed contract and opted out of the Harrison County Utility Authority garbage deal.
It looks like Gulfport may have the better deal, reducing the number recycling days pick up while maintaining the twice a week garbage pickup with little increase in cost. With only 15% of the households recycling, it just makes sense. And if recycling participation grows, that part of the deal can be renegotiated.
Economy of scale usually saves money, but only if you are buying what you really need. That's our opinion, we would like to hear yours. Email your thoughts to firstname.lastname@example.org.
