GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - A homeless man is now facing a charge of second degree murder for an attack that happened earlier this month in Gulfport. The upgraded charge against 31-year-old James Christopher Woodard comes two days after the victim died from his injuries.
Woodard was originally charged with aggravated assault after police say he assaulted a man at a homeless camp near 30th Avenue and 28th Street on July 14.
The victim was 55-year-old Ronald Spencer. The coroner says Spencer's hometown is not known. Spencer was being treated for serious injuries at a local hospital. On July 23, police were notified that he died as a result of those injuries.
Sgt. Joshua Bromen with the Gulfport Police Department said detectives traveled to the Harrison County Adult Detention Facility Tuesday night and served Woodard with an arrest warrant on the charge of Second Degree Murder.
Woodard's bond is now set at $1,000,000.
