JACKSON COUNTY, MS (WLOX) -

A Jackson County jury has been seated. Opening arguments began Tuesday morning in the capital murder trial of Scotty Street.

Street is accused of stabbing Frankie Fairley to death in Dec. 2014 and stealing her van. Autopsy results show Fairley was stabbed 37 times.

Officers say Street drove Fairley’s van to D'Iberville, where he reportedly robbed a convenience store.

Fairley's body was found in a field not far from her Hurley home. The discovery was made one day after family reported her missing.

Prosecutors said Street lived in the same neighborhood as Fairley, and the two knew each other.

The first witness to the stand Tuesday was Fairley’s husband. Charles Fairley, Sr. The two have 13 children. The court also heard from the Fairleys’ youngest child, Micah, and their oldest child, Charles "Bubba" Fairley, Jr.

During the hearing, Street’s attorneys asked the judge to kick members of the media out of the courtroom. The judge denied that request.

If convicted, Street will face life in prison or the death penalty. District Attorney Tony Lawrence tells WLOX that he will seek the death penalty.
