GAUTIER, MS (WLOX) -

Thanks to help from the Mississippi Songwriters Alliance, the first Music on the Lawn brought local songwriters together to make music that makes everybody happy.

Coast musician Taylor Craven has had some national success as a songwriter, but there’s a lot to like about small music festivals.

“We’ve all played parties where we’re dancing music and we're background music and we like that,” he said. “But when we get into our songwriting, we want listening crowds to get feedback. The big thing that comes out of it too is networking.”

The Music on the Lawn was a collaboration between the Mississippi Songwriters Alliance and the City of Gautier.

The alliance also puts on the Mississippi Songwriters Festival in Ocean Springs.

“We’re not aligned to one particular place,” said George Cumbest with the Mississippi Songwriters Association. “You look at Gautier. You figure out what’s unique about them how do we build something in our model to fit them and the same with Pascagoula or D’Iberville. That way you’re tapping into natural resources and building something around it.”

It’s part of a long-range plan by the city.

“I love music and art and I think it's just a good atmosphere for Gautier and its citizens,” said Paula Yancy, Gautier city manager. “And, really, the biggest point is just to bring more activities to our citizens too because I think that improves the quality of life.”

For songwriter Robert Ragno, his reason for performing at the intimate concerts is simple.

“You want people to hear your songs you worked on, you know, it takes a lot of doing,” he said. “And, you get one person out there tapping his toe, you did it right.”

City officials are planning to have this event again and maybe more than once a year. Other event venues are being considered.
