We live in a wonderful time. We have the capability of instant communication with almost anyone at any time; all in the palm of our hands. We can stay connected to everyone all the time which is great - most of the time.
There are times when we need to put aside our smart phones and do our jobs. It's pretty hard to stay on the tasks at hand if we are constantly stopping to check our phones.
The city of Vicksburg sees it as such a big problem in the workplace that the city banned most city workers from using their personal cell phones at all while on the job.
We understand the problems the city faces. But banning the use of cell phones altogether in most work places probably won't work. It's almost impossible to enforce and probably a big morale killer. Smart phones are here to stay.
This is really more a work ethic issue. It is certainly reasonable to expect people to do their jobs while on the job. It seems to us that the city of Vicksburg is telling its staff that when you are supposed to be working; don't be on your smart phone, don't be playing games or just staring out the window. Rather, do your work. That certainly sounds reasonable.
