SOUTH MISSISSIPPI (WLOX) - The casting process is underway for another film planning on shooting in South Mississippi.
Travis Mills already has three films under his belt in the state, and is working on his fourth. The filmmaker from Arizona fell in love with the rich history and decided to make a career of telling the Magnolia state's stories.
"I think when you make a movie in Mississippi, about Mississippi, with people from Mississippi, you come up with something really special and unique," said Mills.
He believes the untapped talent is tremendous in the state, and hopes it shows in films like his most recent project, Blood Country.
"You can work with some people who've never been in a movie before and they'll give you amazing performances. So, you've just got to find those characters. They're out there," Mills said.
Frank Vernon is brand new to the film industry. He's hoping the momentum in the biz continues in Mississippi.
"I'd like to see it grow to the point to where we don't have to worry about only super rich celebrities having a chance," said Vernon.
Others, like Andrew Atkinson, have experience in the industry, but want to see work come closer to home.
"Right now, all of my projects that I have booked I have to drive to Atlanta, or I have to fly to Philadelphia, or I have to fly to Los Angeles. So, it's really nice to not have to do so much traveling," said Atkinson.
The film being currently cast is going to be roughly based on the story of the Dixie Mafia, and it will cover stories like the Sherry Murders in Biloxi almost three decades ago. Mills has named the film The Cornbread Cosa Nostra, after the nickname of the Dixie Mafia.
The plot really speaks to Coast native and experienced actor, Beverly Corpier, who is auditioning for a role in the film.
"I'm from here and I remember when everything was happening, and I think it's a story to be told," Corpier said.
It's a story that veteran actor Jeremy London knew he wanted to help tell. Along with having a role in the film, London is also helping produce it.
He says it's the kind of project Mississippi needs.
"It's good for the community, it's good for the state, and it's good for the morale of the actors. And, it's just fun. It's our happy place," said London.
Filming is scheduled to take place for The Cornbread Cosa Nostra in the fall, with a possible release scheduled for summer 2018.
