HANCOCK COUNTY, MS (WLOX) -

Seventeen-year-old Whitley McQueen is living with arthrogryposis, a rare disease that limits the growth of bone structure.

Because she also has a restrictive lung disorder, she relies on a ventilator to help with breathing. For the most part, she lives life as a normal teenager.

But one day, football player Devin Ladner noticed something at Whitley's house wasn't quite right.

"I drove through here one day and realized Whitley's mom truck was here with no ramp. I said 'Mom, something's wrong. We gotta do something about this,'" said Ladner.

Devin sprang into action, calling local businesses looking for anyone who would help build the ramp. It's something that Whitley's mother says is desperately needed.

"I would have to load it [the ventilator] every day and she would have to walk down the steps," said Priscilla McQueen.

To their surprise, Ladner's calls eventually sparked the interest of Lowes. The company donated material for the ramp, and Devin was able to find the manpower.

Devin and Luke Miller spent an entire day building the ramp from scratch.

"It really shows what coming together and just focusing on one project can really do," said Luke, who also plays football.

Soon, Whitley will have a powered wheelchair that will transport her up and down the ramp, making things even easier.

"This is a project that they took upon themselves, directed it and headed up. It makes me proud as a coach, but it should make all Hancock County folks proud," said head coach, Neil Lollar.
