SOUTH MISSISSIPPI (WLOX) -

A ship built in South Mississippi is the newest addition to the United States Navy.

The USS John Finn was commissioned on Saturday during a ceremony in Hawaii. The ship is the Navy's newest Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer.

Built at Ingalls Shipbuilding in Pascagoula, the vessel is named for a Navy lieutenant who was the first Medal of Honor recipient of World War II.

"Our mission at Ingalls is clear: Build the best ships period, for the Marine Corps, for the Navy, and for the Coast Guard. I would say for America. Our shipbuilders are indeed a national asset who support the defense of our nation and freedom across the globe," said Brian Cuccias, Ingalls Shipbuilding president.

The ship has been under construction for the past five years.

We live in a wonderful time. We have the capability of instant communication with almost anyone at any time; all in the palm of our hands. We can stay connected to everyone all the time which is great - most of the time. There are times when we need to put aside our smart phones and do our jobs.
