The Pelicans picked up a possible starting point guard when they reached agreement on a one-year deal with Rajon Rondo. The Vertical first reported the news.

Rondo met with Alvin Gentry and Dell Demps on Thursday, and again Saturday in Atlanta before committing, according to reports. Columnist Jeff Duncan of Nola.com/Times-Picayune is on-board with the move.

"I like the signing of Rajon Rondo for a number of reasons. First of all, the Pelicans had to address the backup point guard spot after trading away Tim Frazier earlier this offseason," said Jeff Duncan. "We know that Dell Demps and Alvin Gentry did not feel comfortable going into this season with only Quinn Cook and Frank Jackson behind Jrue Holiday. Rondo is a savvy, veteran leader.

"He gives Gentry some flexibility, and versatility that he can handle the point guard position. Allow Holiday to slide over to the two-guard spot, where he thrived at the end of last season. So now this team will be a little deeper, a little more experienced in the backcourt, and that was going to be critical for them going into the season. If they hope to get back into the playoffs in the brutal Western Conference, they had to address the backup point guard position. It's not a game-changer signing Rondo, but it was a step in the right direction for this franchise," said Duncan.

Rondo played in 69 games with the Chicago Bulls last season and averaged 7.8 points, 6.7 assists and 5.1 rebounds. He played with DeMarcus Cousins on the Sacramento Kings during the 2015-16 season

Rondo has averaged 10.7 points, 8.5 assists and 4.9 rebounds in 11 NBA seasons for Boston, Dallas, Sacramento and Chicago. He owns a championship ring with a title in Boston.
