PASCAGOULA, MS (WLOX) - Our Daily Bread in Pascagoula has fallen on desperate times. After 35 years of filling plates and feeding souls, the soup kitchen is up against one of its toughest challenges to date.
"We have people that need this facility. I don't want to shut down and only operate three days a week because we don't have the money," said Missy Meldren, Director of Our Daily Bread.
Meldren pours her heart into her role as director. Now, she says her heart is breaking. She has a small staff she can't fully fund, building repairs that can't be completed, and bills that are overdue.
Meldren does, however, feel comfortable with her food supply.
"We have a lot of needs here that food doesn't take care of. We need financing. We need sponsors for our bills. We need help," she said.
Glenda West understands that need first hand. She used to be on the volunteer and paid side of this operation. Now, she still donates, but also finds herself relying on the meals.
"You can't shut this place down, please. They have donations of food, they have volunteers coming in, but they need money. I know that for a fact," said West.
West has seen the soup kitchen make it through tough times before, and she has faith.
"It always comes back. Got to. The good Lord stands in there. He's got this place in his hands," she said.
And she believes his hands will provide. If you would like to donate to Our Daily Bread, please send the donation to:
