BILOXI, MS (WLOX) - Biloxi police have made an arrest in a July 1 hit-and-run that left a 47-year-old woman in critical condition.
According to officials, 46-year-old Jose Luis Alavares-Rico, of Biloxi, is charged with leaving the scene of an accident involving major injuries. Alavares-Rico made an initial appearance in court on July 15, where he was given a $100,000 cash bond.
The court was informed that the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has a hold on the suspect. According to the judge, he cannot be deported until he stands trial for the hit-and-run charge.
Police say Alavares-Rico was driving a Toyota Tundra pickup truck when he hit the pedestrian near the intersection of Reynoir St. and Howard Ave. and drove off. His truck was seized by police.
Mississippi Coast Crime Stoppers announced Thursday it was offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to an arrest in the case.
