MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) -

A suspected robber is in critical condition after being shot during a robbery inside a gated apartment complex.

The incident happened Tuesday morning, shortly after midnight, on North McLean Boulevard near Jefferson Avenue.

Kerry Petty, 49, tried to rob a woman of her laptop bag at her apartment complex, according to Memphis Police Department.

Police said the woman and Petty struggled over the laptop bag, and that's when the woman's boyfriend ran outside of his apartment and joined the fight.

A neighbor recalled hearing screams and a gunshot.

"It was really shocking to hear that. I was glad to hear that somebody came to help her out," neighbor Raquel Adam said.

When the police arrived, they found Petty on the ground injured with a gunshot wound.

Petty was taken to the hospital in critical condition. He has since been upgraded to non-critical and will likely be issued criminal charges soon, according to MPD.
