OUTER BANKS, NC (RNN) - The National Weather Service reported multiple waterspouts popped up during severe weather Monday along the North Carolina coast.

There also were reports of a tornado, and the area was placed under a tornado warning until around noon local time.

There are two types of waterspouts, according to the National Ocean Service. Tornadic waterspouts are tornadoes that form over the water or move from land to water, and they have the same characteristics.

Fair weather waterspouts are typically not associated with thunderstorms. It forms along the base of developing cumulus clouds, and it develops on the surface of the water and works its way upward.
