GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - On Friday, the theater community received applause as a staple in the community was honored.
The $7,000 raised at a recent event in honor of the late Rick Amos was presented to Memorial Hospital Foundation. The money will go to the Oncology Patient Special Needs Fund in his memory.
Amos - who was an attorney, actor and advocate for those in need - recently lost is battle with cancer. Although the community continues to mourn the loss of Amos, the donation comes as good news for many.
"We're very excited to have the opportunity to partner with our local arts community. This donation is very significant to us. We're going to take this money and we're going to help cancer patients in our community," said Memorial Hospital Foundation President David Estorge.
The fund provides financial support for things such as transportation and medical bills to patients receiving treatment for cancer at Memorial.
"It really means a lot to the family, and we know that Rick was a person that liked to give back to the community," said Vicky Amos, Rick's sister. "We're glad that we're able to give this back to the community as we know he would like for us to do."
