GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) -

Who will take over Gulfport's trash collection routes? The Gulfport City Council holds a special meeting at noon to discuss contract negotiations with potential garbage companies.

Gulfport is going a different direction than Harrison County when it comes to trash collection. The county just approved a new deal with Team Waste to pick up residential trash one day a week. Gulfport leaders say the rate increase linked to that deal and the cutback to once a week collection are why they want their own contract.

Councilman Rusty Walker says the city is looking elsewhere, trying to get the best deal for residents before the contract with the Harrison County Utility Authority expires in October.

A second item on the city council agenda today addresses the lease terms for Centennial Plaza. The new developer Robert Lubin wants to secure the property for 98 years. The Gulfport council seeks fewer years on the lease.
