GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - A suspect is in custody as the investigation continues into an early morning shooting that took the life of a man in Gulfport.
The murder case had officers spread all across the city of Gulfport. But, the intense morning came to a close with 45-year-old Marcos Hosey in handcuffs at the Palm View Apartments on Pass Road.
"Our investigators [and] our patrol officers worked flawlessly all morning, and it's really indicative of the type of work they do. We're bringing this to conclusion within 12 hours of a homicide," said Gulfport Police Chief Leonard Papania.
Investigators were digging into a reported shooting at the O'Neal Road Apartments across town on Thursday. The victim, Arthur Etheridge, died at the hospital. A truck was found at an apartment complex on Loposser Avenue that was believed to be the last one the suspect was driving.
Back on O'Neal Road, residents of the complex were waking up to a shocking story.
"All I know is I was sleeping and after that I just heard gunshots. They went off," said Christina Davies recalling the early morning chaos.
As the neighborhood started stirring, the news of a murder investigation started to spread.
"It really is an uneasy feeling about it," said Caitlin Grace.
Several people remembered being confused about what they were hearing just before one in the morning. "I wasn't sure if it was fireworks or gunshots, so I ran inside because I got scared. I got kids," said Ashley Walker.
Walker was still thinking about the scene crawling with police outside her unit. "It makes me want to move. I want me and my family to be safe, so I want to move," said Walker.
Miguel Morgan was thinking along the same lines when it came to his 9-month-old son.
"He's just a baby, so I want to make sure this area is safe," said Morgan.
Hosey was charged with first degree murder, and taken to the Harrison County Adult Detention Center where he is being held on a $1 million bond.
