OCEAN SPRINGS, MS (WLOX) - Runners took over the streets of Ocean Springs this morning. The 37th annual Wesson Memorial Run began sharply at 8:00.
On average, about 500 runners show up for the event which is held every year on the Fourth of July. The run is named in honor of Ray and Ann Wesson, who tragically died in a plane crash more than four decades ago. They were big supporters of the Ocean Springs YMCA. That organization, as well as the Gulf Coast Running Club sponsor the event. Proceeds from the run help fund the YMCA's scholarship program.
As for the runners, most say it's a great way to start the holiday, running with family and friends. Some of the runners are very serious, while others are simply out to have fun. And they range in age from infants to senior citizens.
