HANCOCK COUNTY, MS (WLOX) - A Hancock County Sheriff's deputy was air lifted to a hospital after crashing during a wild pursuit through Mississippi and Louisiana. Officials said the deputy was not seriously injured and was air lifted as a precaution.
The chase started in Slidell. Louisiana State Police contacted Mississippi police because the suspect was heading east in a car reported stolen out of St. Charles Parish.
Bay St. Louis police officers spotted the vehicle at Washington Ave. and Hwy. 90. They began a pursuit.
When the chase reached Hwy. 90 and Easterbrook St., the Bay squad car reportedly bumped into another car. That gave the suspect a chance to get away.
Officials said the suspect then took Beach Blvd. through Waveland. County vehicles picked up the chase from there, following the car up Lakeshore Rd. to Hwy. 90 and then toward I-10.
When the chase reached a spot south of the Stennis Space Center gate, a Hancock County vehicle got into a second wreck. We're told that deputy suffered a head injury, so a helicopter flew in and took the deputy to the hospital.
Eventually, the chase ended on Old Hwy. 90 back in Louisiana. Officials said Jesse Baptiste, 50, was arrested and charged with aggravated flight and possession of stolen property, but more charges are possible.
