BILOXI, MS (WLOX) - Slippery Sam's was a fixture on the beachfront for decades. Now, a new family attraction could soon be taking its place.
The 14-acre site off Highway 90 at McDonnell Avenue was a waterpark for nearly 30 years. The hills which held the tall water slides are still visible on the now-vacant property. A few remnants of the attraction - like a piece of sky-blue colored concrete that was likely part of a slide - are still visible.
Now, a developer wants to bring a family friendly attraction back to the site: birel carts.
Essentially small, Italian race cars, the carts sit low and can hit 50 miles an hour. Plans are to use 10 of the 14 acres to construct the tracks.
It will be open to the public, but will also host official Birel racing events on certain weekends.
The northern portion of the property, roughly 4-acres, will be developed into an RV park for visiting racers, fans and tourists. The developer has already appeared before the city's downtown redevelopment commission.
A conditional use approval will be required for the tracks, since the land is currently zoned waterfront. Those involved with the project are hoping it can be ready in time for Cruising the Coast in the fall.
Greater Gulf Development is the company behind the project, and the company hopes to have a ground-breaking within 30 days.
