JACKSON, MS (AP) -

Mississippi's largest community college has been put on warning by its accrediting body, which cited financial and other issues.

Hinds Community College was sanctioned because it's violating accrediting rules related to a sound financial base and stability, as well as the effectiveness of its educational programs.

The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges made the decision earlier this month and announced it Friday.

Warning is the lowest public level of sanction for SACS. Hinds has a year until its next review to demonstrate improvements, and remains accredited in the meantime.

President Clyde Muse blames the financial findings on state budget cuts. He says the college has been spending its savings in recent years to make up for declining state funding and enrollment.
