HARRISON COUNTY, MS (WLOX) -

Even with occasional flooding, many longtime river residents say they wouldn't live anywhere else.

Keeping a close watch on the river levels and forecast is a big part of living along the waterways. When the water spills out of its banks, river residents do what they have to do.

“Just got to deal with it. It's all fun and games, about what we expected. This happens a couple times a year and you've just got to be prepared for it and you're good to go,” Steve Thackery said.

A kayak comes in handy, as it's perfect for getting to and from the house. But, various four-wheelers can also get the job done.

Longtime river residents are resourceful and resilient.

“Just part of living on the river. We've seen it like this once or twice, and it's not that bad. Just [have to] prepare yourself. Nothing like living on the river,” said Phil Pelman.

Preparation is a part of that lifestyle, whether it's paying attention to the weather or getting vehicles to higher ground. River folks also look out for one another. It's a special bond that comes handy when facing high water headaches.

“We keep an eye on the weather. But you know the people on the lower end of the road down there, they let you know. They let you know to prepare and they'll start moving their stuff up,” said Pelman.
