SOUTH MISSISSIPPI (WLOX) -

Despite the rain, Tuesday afternoon the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality lifted a water contact advisory in Gulfport for the stretch of water off Gulfport East Beach from Tegarden Road east to Anniston Avenue.

Three water contact advisories issued earlier remain in effect: Gulfport Harbor Beach from 20th Avenue east to Thornton Avenue, East Courthouse Road Beach from Courthouse Road east to Tegarden Road, and Biloxi West Central Beach from Travia Street east to Iberville Drive.

These sections of beach are not closed. But, MDEQ warns if you swim in these parts of the Mississippi sound, the current high bacteria levels mean you have a higher chance of getting sick.

MDEQ will lift the advisories when water samples show that levels are safe for human contact again.

Roads near Highway 90 and Highway 63 in Pascagoula opened this morning. Police removed barricades at 3:15 a.m. after experts determined a chemical leak no longer posed a threat. Emergency teams determined an empty rail car was the source of that leak. They tell WLOX News Now they contacted Chevron officials to make the necessary repairs.
