Effort to consolidate school districts continues in Hancock Co.

HANCOCK COUNTY, MS (WLOX) -

A Bay St. Louis man is continuing his effort to convince city and county leaders to consolidate the Hancock County school districts.

Monday, Ron Thorp made a presentation in front of the Hancock County Board of Supervisors outlining the potential benefits of combining the Bay-Waveland and Hancock County school districts.

Thorp calls his plan an administrative consolidation. He said eliminating administration costs for one of the school districts and combining the two alternative schools would save taxpayers more than $1 million in the first year.

Now, Thorp plans to make the same presentation in front of the Waveland mayor and board of aldermen on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. at Waveland City Hall.

Members of the Hancock County Board of Supervisors said they would be open to learning more from Thorp about the consolidation plan after he meets with leaders from the two School Districts.

They hooked Mississippi's state flag underneath the American flag, and they raised both flags over the city hall grounds. And just like that, five days of debate over whether the state flag should fly in Ocean Springs temporarily came to an end.
