MOSS POINT, MS (WLOX) -

Moss Point Alderman Linwood Grierson died Sunday evening after a brief illness at the age of 61.

Grierson was elected to represented Ward 5 in 2013, but lost his bid for reelection. Fellow alderman Wayne Lennep says Grierson became ill about a month ago and was unable to campaign.

Lennep announced Grierson's passing in a Facebook post Sunday evening.

As alderman, Lennep said Grierson was most proud of seeing the Pascagoula River Audubon Center become a reality. "He was a big supporter of the Audubon. It's in his ward and he's a big naturist; he loved to fish and be out on the river."

Lennep said after retiring from a career in banking with Merchants and Marine Bank, Grierson went back to Mississippi State to became a teacher. East Central High School's website lists Grierson as teaching online elective courses and ROTC.
