Vogue article puts Coast in national spotlight again

The Coast is in the national spotlight again, this time in the latest edition of Vogue Magazine. Business people, tourism professionals, residents and guests all say it's publicity well deserved.

Mick McCormick of Gulfport likes that his city is getting big-time attention, particularly Fishbone Alley.

“I remember what this alley looked beforehand and it was just kind of a grungy alley,” he said. “So, I feel like if people come in here and they put the hard work and time and effort into making this a better place, then, of course, they should get credit for it. Should get positive credit for it.”

And it did. Fishbone Alley was among the highlighted itinerary reflected in the Vogue article calling it a “funky destination.”

The article also highlighted the downtown areas of Ocean Springs, Bay St. Louis, Pass Christian and Biloxi.

Plastered on the page was the White House Hotel.

“I really think they showcased a lot of the key places on the Coast, and there’s a lot of other great local locations that weren't mentioned,” said Ashlei Marie of the White House Hotel. "We’re really excited that we were part of it.”

Kristina Shirey says it’s the kind of spotlight that will help everyone, including beach vendors.

“There’s so much here going on and that article helps out a lot because it lets everybody know,” Shirey said. 

Though unexpected, it is the kind of national attention that Erin Rosetti of Visit Mississippi Gulf Coast works to get.

“That was an extra story that we did not expect,” Rosetti said. “So that was a huge surprise and shock to us and we were super excited about it.”

And, it has extra benefits.

“We’re reaching an audience that we haven't been able to in the past,” Rosetti said. “Vogue is typically female. We find that the female audience is our major audience when they are making travel decisions. We’re trying to get in front of them. We want them to consider us as a destination.”
