INDIANAPOLIS (WXIN/CNN) - A scammer put up a post on Craigslist, and offered $800 dollars a month for a three-bedroom home that a family already lives in.

The Burris family was shocked to see their photos, many inside their house, along with a listing where the so-called owner claimed to be in West Africa on a church mission, in need of a renter.

The Burris` recognized the photos. Just weeks earlier, they had briefly listed their home for sale.

"At the last minute, we decided we didn't want to sell, we didn't want to leave and that's when all of this started to happen," Kentry Burris said.

Their realtor said that he listed the house online on several websites, which is standard for anyone selling these days.

He said he sent all the information to Mibor, a realtor association. They help realtors reports scams like this to the FBI.

In fact, Mibor tracks fake rental scams. Last year, they reported 43 of them in the Indianapolis area. This year, they've already reported 14.

Kentry Burris is filing his own complaints, too. The listing encouraged potential renters to drive by and check the neighborhood.

He said for weeks, people were looking into their home, some even at night.

As of last week, he thinks the post is finally down, and he's hoping his family can get back to their peaceful lives in a home that is definitely spoken for.
