JACKSON COUNTY, MS (WLOX) -

A dolphin is trapped inside Old Fort Bayou in Jackson County.

Experts at the Institute for Marine Mammal Studies say it's a race against time to retrieve the animal, because the low salinity of the water could cause health problems for the dolphin.

Marine conservation ecologist Eric Pulis said it's not unusual for a dolphin to find its way to smaller bodies of water. However, they always seem to make it back to the ocean.

The issue with this case is the dolphin has been trapped since last Wednesday.

Experts at IMMS would like to warn boaters in the Fort Bayou area to watch out and be careful to avoid any contact with the dolphin.
