GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) -

There's an end in sight to the bumpy rides down on Courthouse Rd. in Gulfport. Mayor Billy Hewes joined other city leaders and the southern district transportation commissioner Tom King on Thursday at a ground breaking ceremony for the long-awaited Courthouse Rd. improvement project.

The work will extend from Pass Rd. all the way to Hwy. 90.

At a cost of nearly $6 million, the project has been in the planning stages for several years. Construction work on the project will begin soon and should last for about a year.

“Now, we're not just going to have a road that's paved. We're going to have a road that's going to have beautiful grass in the middle. We're going to have access to our businesses. We're going to have street lights that are going to light up the road that are going to be pretty. And, most of all, it's going to be safe because of the sidewalks,” said Councilman Ricky Dombrowski.

Federal highway funds are paying for 80 percent of the project, with the city contributing 20 percent of the cost.
