BILOXI, MS (WLOX) -

Two years after they were officially freed by the Emancipation Proclamation, slaves received word on their freedom on June 19, 1865.

And for the 152nd year, people across the country will unite to commemorate the turning point in history. The East Biloxi Community Collaborative will join the nationwide celebration by hosting the 2017 Juneteenth Celebration.

On Saturday June 17, the public is invited to John Henry Beck Park to enjoy a 3-on-3 basketball tournament, poetry contest, live music, and free food. In addition to the festivities, the following community members will receive recognition as "I am East Biloxi" Honorees: Dr. Andrea L. Davis, James Lee, III, Tommy Searight.

The awards presentation will begin at 3 p.m., followed by a day full of family-friendly events, including a voter registration drive.

For more information about the celebration visit the East Biloxi Community Collaborative Facebook page, or email aperryman@eastbiloxicc.org.
