BILOXI, MS (WLOX) -

Congressman Steven Palazzo has confirmed to WLOX News Now that he is safe and was not at a ballpark where shots rang out during a baseball practice involving other congressmen Wednesday morning.

"I'm safe. I had another engagement this morning that kept me from going to practice. Thank you for checking in," Palazzo said in a text message to a WLOX staff member.

WLOX News Now spokes to Palazzo over the phone Wednesday afternoon. You can watch the entire interview in the video below.

Palazzo also tweeted and wrote on Facebook Wednesday morning saying, "I am safe and fine. Please pray for my colleagues and any staff and their families who were involved in this morning's shooting."

According to Congressman Mo Brooks, House Majority Whip Steve Scalise, R-LA, was among those shot. Brooks said they were practicing for an upcoming charity baseball game with Democratic lawmakers, when "50 to 100 shots were fired."

We've confirmed Palazzo and Mississippi Representative Trent Kelly play on the same team as Scalise. Kelly also confirmed he is safe. Click here to see the full team roster.

President Donald Trump said in a news conference later Wednesday morning the shooting suspect, identified as 66-year-old James Hodgkinson, of Illinois, died after being shot by police.
