OCEAN SPRINGS, MS (WLOX) -

The Ocean Springs planning commission denied Scott Walker's short-term rental permit during their meeting Tuesday night.

The commission voted 4-1 against the Walkers, who want to operate a bed and breakfast out of their East Beach Boulevard home. Several neighbors expressed their opposition as well.

"We'll have to appeal to the Board of Aldermen," said Walker. "And if the board doesn't change the planning commission's decision, then we will have to again appeal to the Jackson County Court."

Before making their decision, the planning commission went into executive session.

The Walkers filed for a permit more than a year ago and have undergone multiple inspections, the most recent in May, which Walker says they passed.

"There are hundreds of short term rentals on VRBO {Vacation Rentals by Owner} as we speak if you look in the city of Ocean Springs, and they've only given out 26 permits," said Trinity Walker. "So they need to regulate if they're going to tell us that we can't rent then why are all these other people able to rent."

The meeting got heated at one point as Commissioner Teno Henderson told Walker that the city has been more than tolerant with him as he's been operating illegally.

The Walkers are scheduled to go to court on June 28 for a hearing about whether they recently operated illegally by booking a weekend rental this past April.

Scott Walker was released from prison last year after serving more than a year in connection with a fraud scheme.
