OCEAN SPRINGS, MS (WLOX) -

The Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality has closed a section of beach in Ocean Springs after raw sewage spilled into the Mississippi Sound. The area closed is from Jackson Ave. to the small craft harbor.

The city says the spill happened when a contractor working for First Presbyterian Church hit a 10-inch sewer main under Ocean Ave. on Tuesday morning. Public works crews contained the leak around 10 a.m.

MDEQ does not know how much waste water was spilled and will continue to monitor the area. People are advised to stay away from the water in that area and not eat seafood harvested near the shore.
