BILOXI, MS (WLOX) -

Plans are moving forward to bring an expanded boardwalk and other improvements to Biloxi's beachfront. It's all a matter of procedure and funding at this point.

One of the projects planned is a boat launch into the sound near Treasure Bay Casino. The Harrison County Board of Supervisors approved the renewal of a lease for the land to build it Monday morning.

"There's going to be more dredging required. We're going to have more jetty required to get out to the deeper water," said Harrison County Engineer Danny Boudreaux.

According to Boudreaux, the proposed area has to be surveyed, then a sediment transport study has to be done. And then there's the funding.

"We've got enough money for the boat ramp. We don't have enough right now for the boardwalk," said Boudreaux.

The projects are being partially funded through tidelands funds. The city of Biloxi also plans to borrow $7.5 million through bonds. To repay the bonds, Biloxi is working with Harrison County to use tax money the county already collects.

The projects on the list include a proposed boardwalk connecting Biloxi's restaurant row to nearby condos and other businesses.

"I think it would enhance the town quite a bit," said Elaine Isbell. She and her sister Patty Smith grew up in the area. They like the idea of an enhanced waterfront.

"It would certainly give families an opportunity to leave those restaurants and get out and view more of the town," said Isbell.

"Many times when people come to eat, they want to get out and walk on the beach and walk. And to have a boardwalk, it would be a marvelous thing," agreed Smith.

But, it may be a while before the plans become reality. Officials with the county say it's too early to give any kind of timeline for these improvements.
