ST. MARTIN, MS (WLOX) -

Family and friends of Gunner Batia are still coping with his sudden death, but those close to the family are hoping to ease the pain.

On Sunday, the Krewes of Les Belle Fleur, Les Badineurs, and Les Perrots joined together for a benefit fish fry.

“She's one of our sisters. We come together, that's what we do,” said Angela Lollis who is a member of Les Belle Fleur Mardi Gras Krewe.

Angie Hart lost her 20-year-old son Gunner in a fishing accident two weeks ago. Officials say the fishing waders he was wearing filled with water, causing him to drown.

Family members say Gunner had a history of seizures.

“Angie is a very good friend of mine and she is part of my family. I've known her for forever and a day. I found out this happened and the only thing I could do, or thought I could do, was to help her,” said Keven Bennett, captain of Les Perrott.

Krewe members decided to sell fish plates to help Hart with expenses associated with the death of her son.

“While she was out during this whole process, she's not making any money. So we want to make sure that she's covered. You know, you never expect the death of a child or anybody else in your family. But whenever it does happen, most of us are not financially able to take care of it," said Lollis. "We want to make sure it's not a burden for her."

From the food to the venue, and the condiments, it was mostly donations from other krewe members.

“We like to have fun, but the number one reason is to come together and help out anyway we can with the community,” said Phil Dellenger with Les Badineurs.

Gunner's aunt, Tina Weaver, who was also a member of Las Belle Fleur, is thankful for the support their family has received during such a difficult time.

“Thank you to the community, to everybody. Thank you so much. It's just amazing how everybody has pulled together, and it shows just how special he was,” said Weaver.

Batia leaves behind a 19-month-old son named Hayden.
