(WKMG/CNN/RNN) - Father's Day 2017 comes at a time when dads seem to be taking a more active role in raising their children.

A Pew research report says moms and dads in the U.S. work essentially equal hours when paid work hours are combined with household chores and child care hours.

Pew also finds that fathers are putting more time into their families than ever before, including giving piggy-back rides and changing diapers.

So give dads a pat on the back on Father's Day, June 18.

History

The first Father’s Day celebration was June 19, 1910, in Spokane, WA, held by proclamation of the city’s mayor.

Sonora Louise Smart Dodd of Spokane, WA, while listening to a Mother’s Day sermon in 1909, conceived the idea for Father’s Day. She thought her father, William Smart, a widowed Civil War veteran, should have a special day.

After Smart’s wife died in 1898 in childbirth, he was left to raise his six children on a farm.

In 1966, President Lyndon B. Johnson issued the first presidential proclamation honoring fathers. He chose the third Sunday in June.

Since 1972, Father’s Day has been celebrated annually, thanks to President Richard Nixon signing the public law that made the day permanent.

Numbers

Fathers in the U.S. number 72.2 million, with 24.6 million of them living in married-couple family groups with children younger than age 18 in 2016, according to the U.S. Census Bureau’s latest figures.

The bureau says 2 million single fathers are living with their children younger age 18, and 17 percent of single parents are men.

Other numbers reveal that 12.4 percent of dads have kids with their current spouse or partner and also have kids with someone else, and 29.2 million fathers are also grandfathers.

The 209,000 stay-at-home dads have remained out of the labor force for at least a year primarily to take care of the family while their wives work outside the home. The fathers cared for 392,000 children under age 15.

Father's Day spending

Americans celebrating Father’s Day are expected to spend more than ever on gifts, $15.5 billion, the National Retail Federation says. In 2016, the previous record, spending totaled $14.3 billion.

Most spending will be done for special outings like concerts, ballgames and dinners, the trade association says.

Most gifts will be purchased from department stores (39.9 percent). Others will be bought online (33.7 percent) and at discount stores (25.7 percent).

Specialty stores (greeting card/gift store/electronics store) will benefit from 23.8 percent of purchases, with other sales going to local/small businesses (18.7 percent), specialty clothing stores (11.1 percent) and catalogs (1.9 percent).
