HARRISON COUNTY, MS (WLOX) -

If you travel Highway 15 at Lamey Bridge Road in Harrison County, there's a change you need to be aware of starting Wednesday. Traffic will temporarily shift and more stop signs are being added as part of the construction of a roundabout at the intersection.

Earthwork and drainage operations are currently underway to prepare the roadbed for resurfacing.

"Roundabouts are often a better option than a traffic signal or a permanent four-way stop as they allow for continuous movement of traffic," said Commissioner Tom King. "The roundabout will accommodate all forms of vehicles, including large trucks."

As construction begins at the location, crews will install temporary stop signs for motorists traveling in all directions. Weather permitting, beginning Wednesday, June 7, the Highway 15/Lamey Bridge Road intersection will become an all-way stop intersection for a period of several months.

Traffic will also be shifted to temporary roadway along Lamey Bridge Road at Highway 15.  Message boards will advise motorists of updated traffic patterns.

During the all-way stop configuration, turning space will be limited and truck traffic is encouraged to find alternate routes. Trucks will be prohibited from making turns onto Lamey Bridge Road from Highway 15 during the all-way stop configuration period.

"Once construction of the roundabout is complete, it will improve safety and the overall efficiency of the intersection," said King. "As always, MDOT urges motorists to drive slow and be alert for workers in the construction zone."

Work is scheduled to be completed by the end of summer 2017.
