GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) -

The Port of Gulfport is in a wait-and-see status now that President Donald Trump is considering reversing major pieces of the Obama administration's opening with Cuba and reinstating limits on travel and commerce.

Port Director Jonathan Daniels says that although he didn't know how it would play out, he was hopeful after the Obama administration began to normalize relations with Cuba. He was even in Havana about a month ago to put Mississippi in a good position to take advantage of trade once it opened up.

Daniels says Gulfport is well prepared for any trade with Cuba and still remains positive about what might happen.

"Ultimately, we don't know what the Trump administration is going to do," said port director Jonathan Daniels. "There's talks and rumors and conjecture about the possibility of rolling back some of the actions that the Obama administration took, but at the same time Congress is recently put forth two bills, one of them dealing with trade and the other dealing with basically the ability to visit."

According to Daniels, Gulfport is prepared with new facilities at the port. He also said port tenant Crowley has a license to move cargo between U.S. and Cuba and has been involved in that since the late 1990s with humanitarian shipments to the island nation.
