Mississippi Power says it is looking into the cost and schedule of the Kemper County lignite plant.

The company missed the May 31 target date for having the Kemper County energy facility fully operational. Costs now top $7 billion dollars for the plant.

In a statement on the company website, Mississippi Power said in part:

"Mississippi Power today announced that the Kemper County energy facility is not currently fully operational. While the project’s monthly status report is due on June 1 to the Mississippi Public Service Commission, the company continues to assess the project’s schedule and cost.

On Monday, June 5, the company will file its monthly project status report to provide a full update to the PSC. The company on Monday will also make a rate filing for the project."

The PSC will determine exactly how much of that cost will be passed along to customers.

As Kemper's price tag grew, the company pledged customers will not pay expenses over the $2.88 billion dollar cap set by the PSC.
