OCEAN SPRINGS, MS (WLOX) -

Students in Ocean Springs have an advantage when it comes to learning how to speak Español. They have one of the best Spanish teachers in the nation.

Erica Scott, from Ocean Springs Middle School, just won the "Outstanding Teacher of the Year Award: Elementary Level" from the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese.

"Mrs. Scott has been an asset to our foreign language department," Principal Adelle Register said. "She always maintains a positive attitude and demonstrates superb qualities in the classroom to engage and challenge her students."

Scott recently finished her first year of teaching at OSMS but has taught Spanish for a total of 11 years. This past school year, she taught Introduction to Foreign Language and Spanish 1 and said she loves to see those "lightbulb moments" happen with her students.

"My favorite is the introductory level because I love seeing kids going from only speaking English to becoming an emergent Spanish speaker," Scott said.

Scott will officially receive her award at a banquet July 8 in Chicago.
