GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) -

A tiny kitten brought traffic to a standstill on Hwy 49 in Gulfport Wednesday morning.

The kitten was in the southbound lane of 49 near St. Charles Street when an SUV stopped to avoid hitting it. The frightened animal then climbed into the SUV's engine compartment.

An off-duty Gulfport firefighter stopped to help and noticed the kitten was moving through the hot exhaust system, making it difficult to reach in and grab it.

Some Good Samaritans stopped to help and eventually got the cat out. Highway Patrol even stopped by for traffic control.

The kitten appeared to be unharmed and was taken by the driver for additional care.
