Opioid abuse is a serious health issue. Drug overdose is the leading cause of injury death in the United States. Drugs like Oxycontin, Vicodin, Percocet, morphine, and heroin are driving factors in the increase in deaths.
Many addicts get prescriptions from friends or family who are legitimately receiving these prescriptions. Sadly, many people don't realize by providing these legally prescribed drugs they are enabling the addiction. An addiction that could lead to death.
Mississippi is part of the opioid epidemic. But there are things you can do:
•Know the risks associated with prescription painkillers.
•Talk to your kids: Many young people misusing prescription drugs believe they are less harmful because they are prescribed by a doctor.
•Lock up your meds: Secure them with a locking prescription cap, or better yet, a locking medicine box.
•Dispose of your medications properly: The Mississippi Department of Public Safety has set up drop-off locations around the state for proper disposal of unwanted prescription and over the counter medications.
