JACKSON, MS (WLOX) -

The Mississippi National Guard has identified the soldier killed in a training exercise at Fort Erwin in California as Sgt. Kyle Clayton Thomas.

Thomas was assigned to the Senatobia-based 2d Battalion, 198th Armored Regiment, which is a subordinate battalion within the Tupelo-based 155th Armored Brigade Combat Team.

Three others from the team were also injured when an M1A2 Abrams Tank overturned during a "large-scale training exercise" at the National Training Center at Fort Irwin.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with our fallen soldier's family, friends, and fellow 2-198 AR Soldiers," said Maj. Gen. Janson D. Boyles, the adjutant general of Mississippi. "The safety and security of our soldiers and airmen is paramount, and we are working diligently to prevent any future incidents.

The three injured Mississippi guardsmen were taken to the Loma Linda University Medical Center in California and are in stable condition.

The 198th Armored Regiment has paused operations to review safety procedures, and the incident remains under investigation.
